ENGINEERING MANAGER

Engineering Manager | Full-time | Coventry, UK

The Opportunity

In order to support the requirements of a rapidly expanding business, Productiv wish to employ an experienced Engineering Manager to oversee the operation of the company’s engineering department.

The company is working on a number of key engineering projects, collaborating with technical developers who are looking to provide solutions to environmental challenges particularly within the automotive and commercial sectors.

As well as managing the day to day function of the Engineering team, you will also be responsible for developing the manufacturing capabilities to aid the of development Prototype and Production hardware.

The successful candidate will have the ability to manage and develop a team of engineers, liaise with partners, developers and specialists as well as communicate at all levels within the organisation.

Objectives & Key Activities

  • Manage and motivate the engineering team at Productiv through daily guidance, interaction and communication
  • Generate and maintain a team working environment within Productiv through the promotion of cross functional working within the business
  • Lead design and development activities with “hands on” technical involvement
  • Set department and individual goals and objectives whilst conducting appraisals and reviews with team members throughout the year
  • Manage and monitor departmental financial budgets
  • Work with project managers to manage workload and resource challenges to achieve project targets and meet all customer deliverables
  • Provide technical support to the sales team in scoping out work packages when developing project bids
  • Support development of the internal manufacturing capability
  • Identify resource and skills gaps thus supporting the recruitment of the engineering team

Other Responsibilities

  • Workload Distribution, Prioritisation & Planning for the Engineering Team to achieve targets and project driven milestones
  • Owning relationships with key suppliers of engineering tools, including the key contract with Solid Solutions for SolidWorks CAD Software
  • Review and approval of Engineering Team timesheets, expenses and holidays in- line with company policy
  • Conduct one-to-one reviews & appraisals, set and measure objectives as part of ongoing development of team members and own management style and capabilities
  • Develop team members through actively coaching and challenging whilst enabling them to set and achieve their own goals in line with the business objectives
  • Maintain and deploy the engineering team’s training & development plan
  • Sign off and review work proposals generated within the engineering team for use in costing and quoting works for commercial or grant funded projects
  • Maintain and implement policies, standards and procedures to comply with, and move the business management system forward, Providing sign off for Engineering Team Procedures.
  • Development and deployment of (PGP) Productiv’s New Product Introduction Process, providing a standardised approach to bringing products to market in an efficient, profitable manner for Productiv and its customers.
  • Provide a system for controlled engineering change of product and component design to support product development and manufacture.
  • Develop Productiv’s Manufacturing capability through SOP generation, assembly simulation (utilising suitable software packages) and manufacturing facility design
  • Raise ‘Business Case’ documents to support internal capital expenditure requests for both engineering and manufacturing/assembly projects
  • Work closely with sales & marketing team to deliver estimated / costed proposals for commercial engineering projects and where applicable, funding applications for grant funded projects.
  • Work with customers to understand their technical and business requirements as part of the sales and marketing process, providing technical support to the Productiv Sales Team

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Previous experience of managerial or supervisory within an engineering business
  • Engineering background within automotive or broad electro-mechanical engineered products
  • Experience of working within different sized organisations – OEM, Tier 1 or SME
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent IT literacy, being a competent user of MS Office including MS Project
  • Experience of Solidworks or alternative 3D CAD package
  • Ability to hold and maintain relationships at all levels with customer and suppliers
  • Understanding and knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards
  • Experience in generating manufacturing documents, including SOP’s, Job Cards, Inspection Plans, etc.
  • Knowledge of APQP requirements (PFMEA, SPC, MSA, PPAP)
  • Experience of ERP systems for manufacturing control
  • Use of risk mitigation tools to control risks within projects and prioritise risk to be mitigated
  • Engineering degree or equivalent

Education & Experience

  • Experience of delivering government funded, EU, EPSRC, Innovate UK, or other grant funded projects
  • Willingness to travel both nationally and internationally at reasonable notice
  • Thirst for knowledge and self-improvement through continual learning
  • Keen interest in automotive technology or associated products
  • Conversant in new product introduction processes and terminology

SENIOR MANUFACTURING ENGINEER

Senior Manufacturing Engineer | Full-time | Coventry, UK

The Opportunity

In order to meet the requirements of a rapidly expanding business, Productiv wish to employ an experienced manufacturing engineer, to support the company’s engineering function, which is currently working on multiple development projects.

The successful candidate will have the ability to train and develop a team of engineers, have the capability to produce technical reports, and have good presentation skills, which may include delivering training to engineers and technology developers.

The organisation is also collaborating on a number of initiatives and is developing a manufacturing capability to aid the productionisation of hardware. Key tasks to support these projects include developing the machining, assembly and inspection functions, as well as liaising with partners, developers and specialists.
Ideally you will be a natural problem solver with the ability to confidently present your findings and propose solutions with all levels of the business.

 

Objectives

  • Conduct manufacturing assessments of products for new components and assemblies, developed by UK based technology developers
  • Plant and process layout for new products and variants
  • Produce specifications for manufacturing and assembly equipment, as well as creating business cases to support procurement activities
  • Read, interpret and analyse supplied CAD models, drawings and specifications
  • Identify tooling and fixture requirements
  • Guide junior members of staff and other team members
  • Liaise with collaborators, partners, technology developers and suppliers
  • Work closely with Cost Estimators and the Engineering team to support work throughput

Activities & Responsibilities

  • Generation of reports as required for Project and Management meetings.
  • Revision control of information supplied, and maintenance of Bills of Process etc.
  • Support production preparation to ensure smooth production ramp-up into volume
  • Develop and train both experienced and graduate engineers, as well as Technology Developers in manufacturing processes and technologies
  • Document process and engineering know-how to benefit future projects

 

Specific Skills

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

  • A working knowledge of NPI processes
  • Knowledge of business standards including APQP, PPAP and ISO 9001
  • Experience of using product design and manufacturing tools including DFMEA/PFMEA, DFM/DFA, Value Analysis
  • Knowledge of medium and high-volume manufacturing control techniques including working to Takt time, one-piece flow, Kanban, 2-bin, etc
  • An understanding of the basic operation of an ERP system
  • Experience of building open working relationships internally, with suppliers and customers

Training & Education

  • Educated to HND or degree level in an engineering discipline
  • Ability to use industry standard CAD software, in order to interrogate models
  • IT literate (competent user of MS products e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc
  • 5 years minimum experience in OE production environment, preferably from the electro-mechanical sector.
