CNC PROGRAMMER / OPERATOR

CNC Programmer / Operator | Full-time | Coventry, UK

Salary: Competitive

The Opportunity

Productiv is looking for an experienced CNC Programmer/Operator to develop the capabilities within the machining facility at its Coventry site. The company has recently invested in a CNC mill, lathe and Co-ordinate Measuring Machine, which will manufacture hardware to support a number of projects. It now requires an experienced machinist with the ability to operate a range of CNC machines. They will also need to develop programs using both the machine interface and the CAM software. In this role you will also need to be sufficiently skilled to teach a team of graduate engineers good engineering practice in relation to CNC machining components.

Objectives

Your role will consist of: analysing CAD models and/or drawings to determine the optimum method for manufacture; defining the manufacturing sequence, cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and fixture requirements; developing CNC machining programs; proving out product; and modifying and taking the part into production. You must also consider any health and safety implications, inspection requirements and process optimisation. Good communication with other team members, and the management team will be prerequisites.

Key tasks include:
– Manufacturing prototype machined components in a variety of materials
– Developing CNC milling and turning programs that execute successfully,  efficiently and safely
– Reading drawing / model requirements and analysing job orders
– Optimising tool paths
– Identifying appropriate cutting tools, speeds/feeds and fixtures, taking into consideration design requirements, materials and tolerancing
– Demonstrating appropriate use of version control and libraries for the programs
– Guiding other members of staff

Other Activities & Responsibilities
– Revision control of information supplied, and maintenance of manufacturing documentation
– Supporting production preparation to ensure smooth introduction, and ramp-up into volume
– Developing and training graduate engineers
– Documenting process and engineering know-how that could benefit future projects
– Generating reports, as required.
– Supporting daily stand-up meetings to prioritise work throughput
– Maintaining an organised, clean and safe working environment
– Supporting the assembly and disassembly of all products

Specific Skills
– Experience of operating a range of CNC machines
– Experience in general machining techniques
– Ability to manipulate CAD models
– Ability to read component drawings and interpret geometric tolerances
– Knowledge of using CAD models to create cutter paths, using CAM software
– Skilled in problem solving to achieve design intent

Training and Education
– Educated to City and Guilds or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
– Evidence of CAD software training
– Evidence of CNC machining training
– IT literate (competent user of MS products e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
– 5 years minimum experience in an OE production environment, preferably in the electro-mechanical sector.

Objectives & Key Activities

  • Support grant funded projects as a technical facilitator, and eventually leader
  • Support Technology Development Projects to ensure transition of technologies into products through application of technology, manufacturing and commercial readiness levels
  • Support the establishment of manufacturing engineering processes and documentation that meet the expectations of OEM customers
  • Support the development of the assembly facility and associated equipment
  • Deliver customer facing engineering reports and presentations
  • Take ownership of business improvement and capability development activities, building business cases and work packages, having your say on the direction of the business

Other Responsibilities

  • Generation of reports as required for Project and Management meetings
  • Interpretation and analysis of supplied engineering drawings and CAD models

SENIOR MANUFACTURING ENGINEER

The Opportunity

In order to meet the requirements of a rapidly expanding business, Productiv wish to employ an experienced manufacturing engineer, to support the company’s engineering function, which is currently working on multiple development projects.

The successful candidate will have the ability to train and develop a team of engineers, have the capability to produce technical reports, and have good presentation skills, which may include delivering training to engineers and technology developers.

The organisation is also collaborating on a number of initiatives and is developing a manufacturing capability to aid the productionisation of hardware. Key tasks to support these projects include developing the machining, assembly and inspection functions, as well as liaising with partners, developers and specialists.
Ideally you will be a natural problem solver with the ability to confidently present your findings and propose solutions with all levels of the business.

Objectives

  • Conduct manufacturing assessments of products for new components and assemblies, developed by UK based technology developers
  • Plant and process layout for new products and variants
  • Produce specifications for manufacturing and assembly equipment, as well as creating business cases to support procurement activities
  • Read, interpret and analyse supplied CAD models, drawings and specifications
  • Identify tooling and fixture requirements
  • Guide junior members of staff and other team members
  • Liaise with collaborators, partners, technology developers and suppliers
  • Work closely with Cost Estimators and the Engineering team to support work throughput

Activities & Responsibilities

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

  • A working knowledge of NPI processes
  • Knowledge of business standards including APQP, PPAP and ISO 9001
  • Experience of using product design and manufacturing tools including DFMEA/PFMEA, DFM/DFA, Value Analysis
  • Knowledge of medium and high-volume manufacturing control techniques including working to Takt time, one-piece flow, Kanban, 2-bin, etc
  • An understanding of the basic operation of an ERP system
  • Experience of building open working relationships internally, with suppliers and customers

Training & Education

  • Educated to HND or degree level in an engineering discipline
  • Ability to use industry standard CAD software, in order to interrogate models
